Inherently Logical And Spatial Thinkers
The website Freshome, one of the most popular design resources on the web, according to the site’s about page, boasts an impressive 10 million pageviews per month.
It also boasts the interesting fact of being founded in Romania. That may account for Old World viewpoints in a post entitled “Why Men Have Excellent Decorating Taste.” The article makes some assertions that are either offensive or sensible, depending on your point of view. But it certainly feels like the piece claims to debunk one set of stereotypes while holding up another.
Delving — and not very deeply — into the male brain, the Freshome article concludes that men make great decorators because they think differently from women. Men are logical, which makes them adept at designing a kitchen layout, even if they never actually do any of the cooking. They are also inherently spatial thinkers and use a different part of the brain during navigational tasks.
That’s about it. Then again, that may count for everything.
One interesting thing is that decorating style isn’t mentioned. There are certainly men with a flair for what would be called feminine rooms, just as there are women adept at masculine interiors.
I follow Freshome, but mostly just for the design porn. I did, frankly, find it odd that, shortly after I subscribed to the feed (and sent an email asking a small tech question), the founder sent me a request on LinkedIn.
Not sure what this means, just offering for context.
