Johnny Be Good
Today a film opens featuring handlebar mustaches, ascots, paisley dressing gowns, chesterfields, walking sticks and aristocrats reclining on chaise lounges in country estates.
Whether the film turns out to be brilliant or awful, Johnny Depp good or bad, I suggest we all support “Mortdecai” for the reasons above.
Evidently Johnny be bad — along with the rest of it:

I don’t care if he’s (in the words of the late, great Terry Thomas) “an absolute shower!”, I shall go and see it. When I heard that Mr. Depp had made a film about a bounder who is English, waxes his mustaches, collects and sells art, loves fulsome young women, is a snappy dresser and owns a vintage Rolls Royce I immediately told my friends , “My life has been hijacked and lampooned. I shall seek advice from my solicitors!”
Well, we did see the film last night and, altho’ it’s not a heartshattering classic it is MOST amusing (as Queen Victoria might have put it) and an engaging romp, very funny.Fast paced. Mr. Depp plays the character as a languid Terry-Thomas (note the space between the front teeth) and Ms Paltrow is both warm and icy. The really best part of the evening however was, as we were leaving , a rather dishy brunette, taking note of my own waxed mustaches gave me a rather encouraging smile and wink….. tally-ho!
