Cool Or Cold? The Offices Of IBM
After our last post on space-age bachelor pads, a user left a comment saying that such midcentury interiors left him cold.
Well at least they have creature comforts such as beds and refrigerators. Imagine working in the stark offices of IBM circa 1962.
It’s either your idea of cool midcentury heaven, or as cold as hell frozen over.
At least at lunchtime you can step outside and see the sun:
Before heading back inside to sift through more data:
Put me in the “cool, midcentury heaven” camp. I’m a fan of that particular era’s commercial architecture and design, probably because I too am a midcentury production.
I suppose it would depend on what I had to do in such an office. Advertising and media? OK…
Computers? Definitely cold as hell frozen over.
Cold as ice. Everyday? Des clous!
Denning and Fourcade for me.

The corridors and meeting rooms remind me of the base/NASA sets in I dream of Jeannie. Speaking of which, those guy’s pads might make for an interesting post. The idea also just occurred to me to check whether Maj Nelson’s apartment gets “feminised” as time goes on. That’s a word right?
Alas that idea requires sitting through an “I Dream Of Jeannie” marathon.
I’m a Samantha guy myself.
Even one episode of Jeannie is too much to ask, even in the name of interior design. Loved Samantha (60’s early american…shudder), but for Masculine Interior the way to go is, was, and will always be “The Addams Family”. All that money, life of leisure, every object loved for itself and its story.
I am really enjoying your blog and point of view.
I did a quick google image search and it appears there were a lot more soft furnishings in the last series.
